Bendemeer Primary – Peranakan Tile Painting

At Bendemeer Primary School, students had the unique opportunity to explore the vibrant and diverse heritage of the Peranakan culture through a creative art project. As part of their cultural education, the children learned about the history and significance of Peranakan patterns, which blend traditional Chinese and Malay artistic elements.

They studied the intricate motifs, which often include florals, geometric shapes, and symbolic imagery, before being invited to design their own patterns on ceramic tiles. Using a range of bright colors, the students carefully painted these designs, allowing them to express their creativity while gaining a deeper appreciation for this important cultural art form.

At the conclusion of the project, the students proudly contributed to a collaborative mural by affixing their painted tiles onto a designated wall at the school. This communal artwork became a lasting representation of their understanding and appreciation of Peranakan culture, transforming an ordinary wall into a colorful tribute to their hard work and creativity. The mural serves as a testament to the students’ connection to their cultural roots and their role in preserving and celebrating Singapore’s rich multicultural identity.
