Peranakan Art Fiesta at Joo Chiat Community Centre

9th September 2023

‘Di Tanjong Katong, airnya biru, Di situ tempatnya dara jelita; Duduk sekampung, lagikan rindu, Kononlah pula nun jauh di mata.’ – Translation; At Tanjong Katong, the waters are blue, That is the place to find pretty maidens; We live in the same village, yet I pine for you, What more if you’re beyond my eyes’ reach.

ArtStories goes to Joo Chiat for an amazing day of Peranakan Arts and cultural activities! We were so pleased with the array of bold, vibrant, and beautiful colours of the Baju Kebaya worn by the beautiful Nyonyas and Babas!

We were there to conduct three simple Peranakan Art & Craft activity; Peranakan Bookmark colouring, Peranakan Kueh Kueh Clay Making & Peranakan Beaded Shoe Making.

On display in the library of the Community Centre is the Art Installation of Peranakan Shophouses made of cardboard, designed and conceptualised by Jacquelyn from ArtStories and co-created by residents of Marine Parade, Haig Girls & Victoria Junior College as well as committee members from Joo Chiat CC.

The evening went so well attended by many residents and walk-ins. They had fun participating in the art and crafts booth as well as taking pictures of the Art Installation.
